Emergency Preparedness Guide

Keeping your family safe during an emergency begins with proper preparation.

At Oshawa Power, our team works hard to keep the power flowing to your home all day, every day but we know that emergencies happen. The best way to minimize the impact of outages on your family is to remain prepared. To help you prepare, we’ve put together a simple guide to assembling your 72-hour emergency kit and developed a list of emergency resources to help keep you safe.

Assembling your emergency kit.

In the event of an emergency, it is best to be prepared to take care of yourself and your family for at least 72 hours. Here are the standard items we suggest keeping in your emergency kit:

Food and Water

  • Water – at least two (2) litres per person, per day
  • Food – amount may vary, non-perishable foods are ideal
  • Non-electric can opener
  • Reusable (preferably non-breakable) plates, utensils, and drinking vessels
  • Medical Supplies

  • First aid kit
  • Prescription medications – we suggest keeping at least a six (6) day supply
  • Basics

  • Battery or crank-powered flashlight and radio
  • Additional batteries
  • Candles and fire starter
  • Change of clothing and footwear – for each family member
  • Warm blanket – for each family member
  • Basic tools – may include utility knife, pliers, screwdriver, wrench, tape, etc.
  • Whistle and/or flares
  • Cash – at least $100, ideally in small bills and change
  • Sanitary Supplies

    Creating your emergency plan.

    Putting together your household emergency plan should only take about 30 minutes and plays an important part in ensuring your family remains safe and calm in the event of an emergency. Your plan should include:


    Emergency exits for your home or building

    Emergency meeting place in case of separation

    Key emergency contact details

    List of special health needs

    Location of safety equipment (fire extinguishers, emergency shut-offs, etc.)


    Once you have created your home emergency plan, multiple copies should be printed and left in an easy-to-find place. We also recommend leaving a copy in your 72-hour emergency kit.


    While it may be easy to put together your plan and forget about it, we encourage you to review your plan at least once per year to stay informed and update any outdated information.
