peaksaver™
THIS PROGRAM IS NOW AVAILABLE.
Be a neighbourhood power star with peaksaver!
Joining the peaksaver program means you can help reduce the demand for electricity in your community. And you’ll feel great knowing you’re doing something good for the environment.
It’s no sweat to participate. Just sign up to allow Oshawa PUC Networks Inc. to cycle down your air conditioning temporarily. It will help reduce the strain on the electricity system on summer days when electricity use is at its peak.
We’ll only do it when absolutely necessary (usually between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. on weekdays; never on weekends or holidays).
We’ll install a programmable thermostat valued at $250 that allows us to send a wireless signal to cycle down your air conditioner. You probably won’t notice the difference in the comfort level or temperature of your home.
To be eligible you must be a homeowner of a single-family home with a central cooling system. We’ll do all the work at no expense to you. In fact, you’ll even receive $25 from the Ontario Power Authority just for signing up.
What will you save?
You’ll be helping reduce smog and air pollution because coal-fired and gas-fired generating stations will be used less often. And you’ll help avoid the need for costly new generating stations.
By reducing the amount of electricity needed at peak times you’ll be reducing the chance of voltage reductions or other disruptions in the power system. And you’ll help keep electricity prices lower. During peak times, Ontario has to buy power from other places and this is expensive, increasing the overall cost of electricity. By helping to reduce the demand for energy, you help to ensure less expensive electricity is purchased for the province’s needs. It’s cheaper to save a kilowatt than it is to make one.
Want to be an even bigger power star?
Here are four more things you can do to reduce your demand for electricity during peak times:
• Delay using major appliances like clothes dryers, washing machines and dishwashers until after 8pm.
• Turn up your air conditioning thermostat higher than 24 degrees Celsius.
• Use fans instead of air conditioners
• Turn off all unnecessary lights (use compact fluorescent light bulbs if you can – they use 75% less electricity).
• If you have an old secondary refrigerator that you are not using, arrange to have it picked up for free. Visit www.everykilowattcounts.com/roundup for more information
How do I sign up?
Call Oshawa PUC Networks Inc. peaksaver call centre at 1-866-323-0206 to book an appointment for a service technician to come to your home to install the programmable thermostat valued at $250. Then feel good knowing you’ve done something good for the electricity system and the environment. It’s that simple.
Thanks for being a power star!
