Energy Saving Tips

It pays to use energy efficiently throughout your home!!!

Use energy efficient lighting products, like compact fluorescent bulbs. They last 10 times longer and use 75% less energy than regular bulbs.

15% of home energy use goes for refrigerators and freezers; 9% goes for other appliances.  Chest freezers are more energy efficient than upright freezers as they retain the cold more when the door is open.

Locate your refrigerator away from heat sources such as the range or dishwasher and keep it at least four inches from the wall if it has back coils.

Use the light or econo-wash cycles for your dishwasher when you have easy to clean loads.  It uses less hot water.

Install energy-saving shower heads and low-flow aerators on kitchen and bathroom faucets to reduce hot water consumption by 30%.

Use cold water for washing your clothes.  If you have an electric water heater, heating the water accounts for 90% of the energy used to wash a load of clothes.

Run your clothes through a second spin cycle in your washer and shake them out before putting them in the dryer.  They dry quicker and you save electricity.

Clean your clothes dryer lint filter after each load.  Check the dryer exhaust duct for leaks or plugging and make sure it goes outside.  Don't over dry - It harms clothes and wastes energy.

Use an electric kettle instead of the stove to heat water.  It will use half as much energy.

"Instant on" appliances like televisions and stereos use electricity even when they are turned off.  To save energy unplug them or connect them to a power bar which can be turned off when they are not in use.
